‘She was a firework’: EMT remembered for her compassion, leadership

Rylee Hanson, an EMT, was killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 65 in February by a drunk driver. Friends and family have remembered her for her compassion, leadership, warmth, and generosity. She was also remembered for her ability to connect people and bring them together. Hanson, who graduated from high school with honors and earned her EMT certification, was preparing to study forensic criminology at Indiana University. She also had a passion for creating a mentoring group at Kankakee Valley High School for students who needed support or needed a place to belong. Hanson's impact extended into communities she was part of, including Haunted Hills Hospital in Merrillville where she had worked since she was 12.
