Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff has outlined plans for a $202 million federal award for rural health following the Trump/Republican Medicaid cuts that will cost Ohio $33 billion over a decade. The funds will be distributed through the Rural Health Transformation Program, an attempt to offset cuts in other areas such as Medicaid funding. The biggest pot of money is $92 million, used for services such as hospital support and health access for struggling areas, primary care services particularly impacting students, and $21.1 million for rural school-based health centers. $13.5 million will go towards workforce programs. Vanderhoff highlighted high infant mortality numbers compared to other states and high maternal morbidity and mortality rates directly impacted work in rural areas.
