The project, Objection AI, was backed by billionaire Peter Thiel and Balaji Srinivasan, a crypto evangelist and prediction-market enthusiast, aims to create a "truth tribunal" for journalism. The idea comes from Aron D'Souza, an Australian lawyer who helped facilitate Thiel's legal strategy to secretly bankroll the lawsuit that destroyed Gawker. The project uses large language models from major AI companies and allows anyone to file a complaint against a piece of journalism, even if they are not the subject of the article. The tribunal issues a verdict on the factual claims in the story, which is then marketed as a public score of their integrity and track record. Objection’s system rewards clear evidence and allows for counter-narrative statements, which can still be easily classified as privileged. However, the system fails to eliminate anonymous sources, arguing that their information should not count.
