A court has ordered Walgreens to pay $5.4 million in civil penalties and an additional $600,000 to reimburse district attorney offices or investigative costs. The case was led by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office and led to numerous instances of price gouging on over-the-counter drugs, infant formula, and baby food sold after their expiration dates. The settlement also requires a three-year compliance program that includes monthly inspections of shelves stocked with medications, baby food, and other expired items. The company will also be required to correct inaccurate sales tags and post signage explaining its "Price Promise Guarantee".
