As more people use GLP-1 medications for weight loss, some patients have reported increased hair shedding. This could be due to rapid weight loss which puts stress on the body and can lead to a condition called telogen effluvium, where more hair follicles than usual shift into a resting phase, causing hair to fall out more easily. The medications, which include drugs like semaglutide and are often used to treat diabetes and support weight management, often reduce appetite, and lead to lower intake of key nutrients like protein, iron, and vitamins important for maintaining healthy hair. Researchers are working to determine the exact cause of the hair loss. However, most cases of hair loss are temporary, with normal hair growth returning several months later.
