House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has endorsed the Senate-passed bill to reopen the Homeland Security Department (DHS), calling it a victory for Democrats as it funds airport screeners but not immigration enforcement operations. Jeffries also suggested that Democrats might help GOP leaders pass a rule required to bring legislation to the House floor. Conservative members of his conference are angry that the Senate bill withholds funding for certain parts of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). They are threatening to block the rule unless these funds are returned to the bill. However, Speaker Mike Johnson may abandon the bill altogether and instead move on a stopgap bill to fund DHS, including ICE and CBP, for eight weeks at current levels.
