Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has announced that the state will not observe Cesar Chavez Day on March 31, following a New York Times investigation alleging that the late Mexican-American labor and civil rights leader had sexually assaulted and abused women and girls. This decision has led to widespread outrage and sorrow among lawmakers and labor groups across the country, including Texas. Abbott hopes to make this permanent by working with the Legislature and removing the holiday from state law in the 2027 session. The Mexican American Legislative Caucus, which called the allegations "deeply disturbing," has called for the holiday to be replaced with one that honors labor leaders like Dolores Huerta. The allegations have also led to cancellation of events and celebrations in Texas.
