Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and wife of Democratic New York City mayor, has been accused of pandering to her audience in subtle ways. In a 2016 video, Siebel recalled her own loss to juvenile offenders in San Quentin, where she shared her experiences with them. She also shared her own experiences with juvenile offenders, who were often sentenced for violent crimes. Some interpreted these remarks as racially motivated. In February, Gavin Newshom was criticized for using a black accent on the “All The Smoke” podcast and suggesting that he was speaking to a largely white audience in Atlanta, which he may have assumed was black.
