New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's administration has warned that gas prices could increase by $2.23 over the next five years as she fights to delay the state's controversial green energy mandates. A leaked memo by Hochuls' camp details projected fuel costs for households if a cap-and-invest initiative goes into effect under the Empire State's climate laws. New York City households could pay another $2,300 a year in natural gas costs, on top of massive rate increases by National Grid. Upstate households would pay an even more staggering $4,300 per year in those costs. The governor's challenge to meet the goals of the 2019 climate law could lead to significant cost to families. The cost of the cap and-invest program, which would charge fossil fuel companies based on the amount of carbon emissions they spew, could be significantly higher than the national average.
