On Tuesday, Mayor Doud was re-elected as mayor of Mackinac Island, a tourist spot in Michigan, marking her 50th year in office. The island, which is car-free, is home to over a million visitors each year and only about 600 residents year-round. Doud took over her family business, the Windermere Hotel, in 1975 and has run for re-election every year since. She has maintained the horse-and-buggy culture associated with the Victorian Era throughout her tenure. While this makes her the longest-serving current mayor in America, she still has a way to go to become the longest in American history.
