ALLEIGH MARRÉ: AAP Won’t Protect Children As ‘Medical Consensus’ Crumbles

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has stated it will not change its stance against gender transition surgeries before age 19, despite the changing tide of "medical consensus". The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) also supported this stance, while the American Medical Association (AMA) also voiced support. The AAP's stance aligns with a recent resolution at its Annual Leadership Conference, which voted for recognition of transgender patients and providing gender-affirming care. Despite President Donald Trump's executive order declaring that the US will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support any medical procedures or treatments intended to change a child's sex, including surgical and chemical interventions for individuals under 19. Despite this, the Department of Health and Human Services awarded more than $19 million in federal grants to the AAP in fiscal 2025 alone. Alleigh Marré, Executive Director of Parents Coalition, argues that the AAP should lead the call for caution around these irreversible interventions and should be guided by evidence, prudence, and institutionalism.
