The White House has endorsed Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy's property tax bills, which the administration believes are crucial to creating the proposed Alaska liquefied natural gas pipeline. The bills exempt property tax on the proposed gas line for up to 10 years or when the gas line produces one billion cubic feet of natural gas a day, and replace state and local sales and income taxes with an “alternative volumetric tax” a six-cent tax that increases by 1% every year. The administration argues that the Alaska pipeline could strengthen U.S. energy security, provide long-term economic benefits to Alaska and bolster the nation's role as an energy supplier to allies in the Indo-Pacific. However, questions remain regarding the project's financial viability and its cost.
