A study by the Great Salt Lake Project at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney School of Law and Grow the Flow, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the lake, has found that despite nearly $100 million in funding and a partnership with the federal government, Utah lawmakers failed to adequately address major policy gaps. The study suggests that urban and suburban water use accounts for more than a quarter of water consumption in the region. The lake, which is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, is currently 36.1% full and is between critical and collapse. The report also suggests that restoring this lake will require increased state funding, federal and philanthropic partnership, policies that reduce municipal and agricultural water consumption, and cooperation with neighboring states that share the Great River watershed.
