A study by Molecular Biology and Evolution has revealed that some populations in the Andes in northern Argentina have developed an immunity to arsenic, which would typically trigger serious illness or worse. The study identified variants near a gene called AS3MT, which plays a significant role in how the body processes arsenic. These variants were found to be more frequent in high-arsenic communities. This level of arsenic exposure would likely kill most people on Earth today. Researchers found that reducing the buildup of its most toxic form reduces the risk of biological damage even when exposed to high concentrations of arsenic.
