Google has issued a warning about the imminent "Q-Day" where a quantum computer could potentially break all cryptographic security, potentially leading to hacking and identity theft. The transition to post-quantum cryptography, or PQC, is known as a significant escalation in the process. The deadline for this transition has been moved to 2029, around the time of the next U.S. presidential inauguration. This may be due to a report last year showing that a 2048-bit RSA key could be factored in less than a week with a 1 million "noisy qubit". Current quantum computers are too error-prone to be a significant threat due to their noisy nature.
