Jane Fonda reminds us that political retribution is not a new tactic: Marilyn Greenwald
Published on April 26, 2026.
Marily Greenwald's new book on Jane Fonda, "Jane Fonda: There's a Great Deal to Say," reveals that top-down harassment of the actress involved the FBI, CIA, and the White House. Fonda was arrested in 1970 for drug smuggling after filming of "Klute," but charges were later dismissed due to a lab analysis confirming the pills were vitamins. The FBI obtained Fonda's account transactions from two Los Angeles banks without her permission and the CIA intercepted Fonda’s mail in the 1970s, even though the law prohibits the CIA from involvement in domestic matters. Greenwald argues that government-sponsored harassment of citizens is not a new tactic and that robust debate is preferable to government-mandated harassment.
