President Donald Trump is threatening to send ICE agents to Boston's Logan Airport if Democrats fail to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has been partially shut down for over a month due to stalled negotiations over immigration enforcement reforms. The move is seen as an attempt to control security at Logan Airport, where over 20 TSA officers have quit since the start of the partial government shutdown. The President of the AFGE Local 2617, the New England branch of the TSA officers’ union, Mike Gayzagian, stated that the move was not necessary at this time but may be reevaluated if staffing situation deteriorates. While 50,000 TSA workers continue to work without pay, nearly 400 TSA employees have walked off the job. On Thursday, 10 percent of TSA officers missed work due to absenteeism, which is often higher in some airports.
