Geno Smith, a 35-year-old journeyman quarterback, is returning to the Jets for the next season as part of their strategy to build a new team and a new program. The Jets were looking for a veteran journeyman to replace Ryan Fitzpatrick, who brought the team within one win of being back in the playoffs a decade ago. Smith, who was on his sixth NFL team when he played for the Jets, is just a few years away from throwing for over 4,200 yards and leading the Seahawks to the playoffs. He has been criticized for his lack of leadership and toughness, despite renegotiating his contract with the Raiders to make a trade happen. Pete Carroll, who coached Smith in Seattle and contributed to his comeback there, was fired by the Raiders after the season ended. Smith's return to New York is seen as a chance to prove the doubters wrong.
