Coinbase has partnered with the Linux Foundation to launch the x402 Foundation, an industry group that will oversee the development of a new internet payments standard. The foundation will oversee governance of the x400 protocol, which allows websites to request and receive payments during normal web traffic. The protocol will remain vendor-neutral under Linux Foundation governance, allowing for transparent growth and accessibility. Companies participating include Google, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, Shopify, Cloudflare, and the Solana Foundation. The x400 Foundation aims to maintain interoperability across implementations and support developers and merchants building services around the standard.
