The Supreme Court of Finland has convicted Päivi Rasanen, a member of the Finnish Parliament, of "insulting" a group based on sexual orientation for publishing a church pamphlet over twenty years ago. A Lutheran bishop, Johanna Pohjola, was also convicted for publishing the pamphlet. The court ruled that it is illegal to publish “insult” content and has demanded that Pävari and Pohtola remove statements from the pamphlet, which was intended to help others navigate same-sex marriage debates. The decision was likened to Orwell's 1984 and has led to the mandatory erasure of history and online content. Despite a seven-year legal battle, the Supreme Court unanimously acquitted Rasananen and Pahjola on all counts, finding that posting Bible verses was not a crime.
