The US Supreme Court has ruled that Cox Communications cannot be held liable for music piracy committed by its users, despite a billion-dollar lawsuit by major labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music. The lawsuit was filed in 2018 after Cox Communications was sent tens of thousands of notices flagging infringement of copyrighted songs. The labels won their lawsuit with a $1 billion award, but the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2024 ruled that the amount of damages was not justified and a federal district court should hold a new trial to determine the appropriate amount. The Supreme Court's unanimous decision is seen as a decisive victory for the broadband industry and American people who depend on reliable internet service.
