President Trump's 2027 budget proposal for the agriculture industry has sparked concerns among farmers over 5 billion dollars cut from funding. John Hansen, President of the Farmer’s Union of Nebraska, has argued that farmers are in a crisis and that the proposed budget cuts will exacerbate this. The proposal proposes transferring many of the USDA's headquarter employees to regional hubs to reduce unnecessary bureaucratic layers and increase efficiency in the federal government. Hansen argues that this is not the first time agriculture has been hit by tariffs, which have pushed some of the US' largest global customers, like China, to seek alternative needs elsewhere. The proposed budget for 2027 includes additional cuts to the Farm Service Administration, which still provides farm programs vital to farmers.
