A transition to renewable energy could mitigate major international conflict, as oil is a leading cause of modern-day war, with between one-quarter and one-half of interstate wars between 1973 and 2007 linked to oil. Nearly 75% of the world's population lives in countries that import fossil fuels to power their societies and provide basic services. Experts suggest that a transition away from fossil fuels could reduce resource competition, terrorism, and scarcity issues in the future. The transition will require careful attention as resources for renewable energy production are not limitless and often sourced in unstable parts of world. The main goal of the transition is to decarbonize economies and reduce the use of fossil fuels that are contributing to global warming. However, climate change has become a "growing flashpoint" for conflict among countries as resources are dwindling and some areas become increasingly unlivable.
