President Trump has requested $152 million to reopen California's Alcatraz Island as a maximum-security federal prison for violent offenders and undocumented immigrants. The proposal was personally pushed by the president, who described the island as a "foreboding" and "surrounded by sharks." The 2027 budget request includes $152m for the first year of reconstruction costs. AlCatraz was closed as a federal prison in 1963 and now serves as a popular tourist destination and bird sanctuary. However, a full rebuild of the facility could take years and millions of dollars.
