A Gene Therapy That Can Reverse Blindness Just Won a $3 Million Prize

A gene therapy developed over 25 years can restore sight to people born with degenerative blindness, a condition caused by mutations in the RPE65 gene. The researchers, Jean Bennett and Albert Maguire, developed the therapy using a healthy copy of the gene into retinal cells and tested it in animals. The breakthrough became evident in human trials, where patients saw significant improvement in functional vision compared to those who did not receive the therapy.
