It is Whale Watching Week in Oregon, where visitors will be able to spot gray whales as they migrate north to their Arctic feeding grounds. However, these animals are not immune to the impacts of climate change, according to scientists. The eastern North Pacific gray whale population is estimated to be at about 13,000 in 2025, the lowest number since the 1970s. This migration is due to the melting of Arctic sea ice, disrupting the food chain whales depend on. Other threats include ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear.
