The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has threatened to remove Customs and Border Protection officers from airports in sanctuary cities, potentially causing significant disruption to international travel out of California. The move aligns with the Trump administration's policy of terminating federal funding for jurisdictions that prevent local law enforcement and jails from working with federal immigration enforcement agents. If this threat comes into force, travel at places like San Francisco International Airport would "effectively halt" international travel. California Governor Gavin Newsom's press office has criticized the administration's plan, calling it a "stupid idea".
