Community pushes Miami-Dade to open long-stalled mental health facility

The Center for Mental Health & Recovery, a seven-story building in Miami-Dade County, has been empty since 2023. The center is expected to offer potentially life-saving services, reduce the county's jail population, and address the growing unhoused population. The demand was made by the People Acting for Community Together (Parent), a local nonprofit. Other demands included creating a sliding scale of incentives for developers to build more affordable housing. The project was funded through a countywide bond referendum in 2004, but its opening stalled until 2024.
