Developers have requested more land for oil and gas fracking in the Egypt Valley Wildlife Area in eastern Ohio, following the Ohio Oil and Gas Management Commission's approval of 4,727 acres for energy extraction in January. Since then, the commission has received nine requests for development on more than 17,000 acres, some of which are overlapping. Most of the land is in Belmont County, but some parcels are in Guernsey County. Some environmental groups are concerned about allocating more land to fracking on public land, with some believing that fracking can lead to earthquakes and the high water use from the fracking. The public comment period for some of the fracking requests ended March 15, but the latest round of requests has a period extending to April 27.
