Meta After Killing the Metaverse: 'Just Kidding'

Meta has reversed its decision to discontinue its virtual environment, Horizon Worlds, for VR, stating that it will continue working in VR for existing games and will not be ported to mobile platforms. The company's CTO, Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, stated that the Horizon Unity runtime games that currently exist will continue to operate in VR and won't be portaged to mobile platform. Despite the loss of Horizon Worlds and its popularity, Meta is still moving the metaverse to mobile devices. In January, the company cut approximately 1,500 workers from its Reality Labs division, which includes all of its XR (extended reality) ambitions, and ended support for some of its popular apps like the Supernatural VR exercise game. Despite this, Bosworth noted that the company still plans to continue working on the Metaverse, where users are beholden to a headset to interact with friends in a bland, pastel-toned virtual world.
