The number of aircraft accidents has increased over the past decade, with only 675 serious injuries reported from 2003 to 2023 recorded on domestic airlines. This is not the norm, as many as 47 million passenger vehicle occupants were injured on highways in the same period. The FAA mandates the use of the Engineered Materials Arresting System (ESP), which can stop an aircraft from landing in seconds.
