Family of man killed in Wyandotte County jail files federal lawsuit

The family of Charles Adair has filed a federal lawsuit against the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, Sheriff Daniel Soptic and Richard Fatherley, the deputy charged in Adair's death. The 50-year-old died inside the Wyandott County Detention Center in 2025 from complications of mechanical asphyxia, cardiovascular disease, and chronic alcoholism. The lawsuit demands a trial by jury and the case to be tried in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City.
