The Dandora Estate Sewage Treatment Works, a vital "kidney" for Nairobi, processing 80 percent of the city's wastewater. The project was completed after years of manual labor and heavy lifting, with the old pre-treatment system failing. The transformation was made through a Chinese-built automated bar screen system that intercepted 95 percent of solid waste and 90 percent of silt before they could choke the plant. The water was returned to its essence through anaerobic sedimentation, bacterial decomposition, and the natural disinfection of the East African plateau's intense UV rays. Despite the overwhelming odor, the project's head of engineering, Li Maowu, and his team, reclaimed the land where sewage once overflowed and trash piled high, lush lawns and green shrubbery now frame the facility. The Chinese waste treatment industry has graduated from meeting "eraeraera" to achieving world acclaim.
