UN weighs continued Lebanon presence after peacekeeping mission ends

The United Nations (UNIFIL) is considering maintaining its presence in Lebanon after its mandate ends at the end of December. The force, which was first deployed in 1978, has reported five deaths in recent weeks, including those from Indonesia and France. UNIFIL's mandate includes monitoring a ceasefire, supporting the Lebanese army in its deployment into the south, and enforcing a prohibition of illegal arms there. However, the force is facing financial constraints due to unpaid fees by member states, forcing it to cut 25% of its operations.
