Asia is scrambling for liquefied natural gas (LNG) as Qatar halts output due to the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Government officials in Japan, Taiwan, Bangladesh and Pakistan have said they plan to diversify their import sources and buy LNG from the spot market if the war drags on. LNG buyers in Asia account for over 80% of shipments from Qatar, the world's No. 2 producer after the US. Taiwan, which generates over 40% of its electricity from LNG and imports a third of its supply from Qatar will also consider buying more from the US if the conflict continues. A prolonged disruption could impact power generation and industrial output as summer approaches.
