Tabatha Spacek, a 37-year-old woman from Baytown, Texas, experienced severe abdominal pain when she was 15 years old and was forced to drop out of high school due to the severe attacks. She also experienced auditory hallucinations and was diagnosed with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), a rare disorder that causes a deficiency of the enzyme hydroxymethylbilane synthase. Spacek's symptoms were exacerbated by even a single glass of wine. She was finally diagnosed in December 2024 and underwent extensive treatment. She now avoids triggers like alcohol and receives monthly injections of a specialized medication to reduce the buildup of toxins in her body.
