The manner of death of nearly blind refugee, Nurul Amin Shah Alam, found after he was released by Customs and Border Protection officers in New York state was determined to be homicide. The nearly blind man was found dead in February after being left outside a coffee shop without speaking English. His cause of death was determined as complications of a perforated ulcer caused by hypothermia and dehydration. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz was barred from publicly releasing the official autopsy and report on the death. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately comment on the medical examiner's findings. New York Attorney General Letitia James said Shah Alam had fled genocide to build a life in the country but was abandoned and left to suffer alone.
