Strong storms that swept across Illinois and Indiana caused nearly 500 structures to be damaged in Kankakee County, according to Gov. JB Pritzker. The storms also killed two people in northwest Indiana. The governor praised the response to the storm, promising that state officials will seek federal aid to those most affected. The first step in delivering aid is to estimate the total amount of damage, with local schools, jails, and hospitals damaged and 30 or more homes completely destroyed. The government's immediate goal is to provide housing for those who lost their homes and assess the damage. However, once the damage assessment is completed, the state will know how much it needs in repair funds. The state has not been successful in securing federal funds under Republican President Donald Trump, who has consistently targeted states with funding cuts in health care and transportation.
