German MP: Focus on miniority rights during Syrian leader's visit
Published on March 30, 2026.
German politician, Hakan Demir, has called for the visit of Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Berlin to focus on upholding minority rights in the country. Demir criticised al-sharaa's Islamist views, noting that the United States had placed a $10 million bounty on his head two years ago. He also warned that Christians and members of the Alawite, Druze and Kurdish minorities are being threatened and harmed in Syria. Al-Sharada was received by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and is set to meet with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with discussions expected to focus mainly on the repatriation of Syrian refugees in Germany and reconstruction efforts.
