Despite Trump's Promises and Rodríguez's Amnesty Law, Hundreds of Venezuelan Dissidents Are Still Behind Bars

Despite President Donald Trump's promise to free Venezuelan dissidents, hundreds of political prisoners are still behind bars. The amnesty law was signed by Delcy Rodríguez, who signed it in February to free nearly 1,000 political prisoners. However, at least 485 people remain in political detention, some of whom are not Venezuelan citizens. To obtain amnesty, detainees must petition the same courts that prosecuted them and receive a response within 15 days. Many have been excluded from the protections of the law due to their use of "terrorism" as a weapon against political opposition. The Venezuelan government has denied 111 amnesties in recent weeks, with Martha Tineo, director of the Venezuela-based human rights organization Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón, suggesting the real number is likely higher.
