Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has commuted the prison sentence of Tina Peters, a former county clerk and 2020 election denier, who was sentenced to nine years in prison for tampering with election equipment. The move comes after a state appeals court found Peters' lengthy sentence improper and directed her to be resentenced. The case had been championed by President Donald Trump, who has called for the release of Peters. Peters was convicted of four felony and three misdemeanor charges in August 2024 for using another person’s security badge to allow someone associated with MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, a prominent election denialist, access to county election equipment involving Dominion Voting Systems. Despite Peters' claims of widespread fraud, she never identified a single bogus vote. The court ruled that the judge had too much emphasis on Peters' beliefs about election being stolen, violating her First Amendment rights.
