Arizona AG Hits Kalshi with Criminal Charges

Kalshi, a popular prediction market, is being charged with class 1 and 2 misdemeanor charges in Arizona for illegal betting and wagering, and illegal “election wagtering.” The charges make the state the first jurisdiction to file criminal charges against the prediction market. Kalshi had already filed a civil suit against Arizona and other states in an attempt to prevent state enforcement. Kris Mayes, the attorney general of Arizona, stated that Kalsh is making a habit of suing states rather than following their laws and is attempting to evade accountability. The company's actions have been criticized by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFT) and its chairman, Mike Selig, who have both criticized the charges.
