The "Save America Act" is being debated in the US Senate, which would require all voters to prove they are U.S. citizens when they register to vote and show photo I.D. at polling places on Election Day. Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon argues that the bill could lead to voter disenfranchisement. He points out that proving citizenship is not always easy for many Americans, with 69 million women having different last names and tens of millions without passports. Simon also mentioned that studies in Minnesota show that noncitizens' voting is infinitimately small, with only three convictions related to noncitizen voting out of over 13 million votes cast between 2015 and 2024.
