Arkansas lawmakers ended their fiscal session with a failed proposal to keep public television connected to PBS, which had twice failed in the House. The measure would have allocated $550,000 in state funds to help match private donations and cover the cost of Arkansas TV’s membership in the Public Broadcasting Service, a cost that officials say runs close to $2 million annually. The issue arose due to a decrease in federal support from $2.5 million a year to just $15,000, forcing leaders to consider sustaining programming that reaches viewers across Arkansas. The proposal faced an uphill battle, needing 75 votes to pass. However, a procedural move known as a clincher motion effectively ended any chance of the bill being reconsidered during this session.
