A study by University College Cork in Ireland has found that drinking coffee may boost your mood and cognitive performance, even without the added caffeine. The study compared caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee to those who did not drink coffee. It found that both types of coffee lowered stress, depression, impulsivity, and inflammation, while boosting mood and cognition. However, only caffeinated coffee was linked to reduced anxiety, psychological distress, blood pressure, improved attention, and stress coping. Decaffeinated tea led to enhanced sleep, physical activity, and memory. The findings suggest that even caffeine-free coffee may still be linked to the gut-brain connection. The research also suggests that coffee may each have physiological and psychological pros and cons that should be weighted differently for each individual.
