University of Minnesota neuroscience professor Geoff Ghose, who studies brain activity in monkeys, has been suspended from research involving animals for a decade due to repeated problems related to lab animal care and a failure to follow the rules. The university's animal research ethics committee suspended Ghose in 2025 after federal inspectors cited problems related in animal care, surgical practices and recordkeeping. The committee also suspended Ghoses' "animal protocols" plans, which must be pre-approved by the committee, meaning he cannot continue his primate research. Despite these suspensions, animal rights groups and veterinarians have questioned whether the University of Minnesota kept a close eye on Ghose. Ghose still teaches classes at the university and no longer does animal research.
