The U.S. Department of Agriculture has cancelled a key program for young, underserved farmers in the Bay Area due to alleged discrimination. The program, the Increasing Land, Capital and Market Access program, provided $300 million in grants to help “underserved” farmers from marginalized communities who have been historically disenfranchised from breaking into agriculture. The Farm Service Agency program also cancelled 49 of 50 nationwide projects aimed at connecting the next generation of farmers with land, capital and markets. The cancellations come as California farmers face uncertainty about the future of their family farms. The USDA also issued a funding freeze for remaining projects, which required approval before funds could be spent.
