Miami-Dade County Public Schools is seeking to gain more control over Miami's NPR station, WLRN. The proposed language in an amended management agreement could potentially undermine WLN's journalistic independence, according to industry expert Kelly McBride. The contract between the school district and South Florida Public Media Group (SFPMG), which manages the station, is set to expire in June 2027. Among the proposed amendments is a clause requiring a joint committee to recommend a candidate for SFPMG's CEO if there is a CEO vacancy. Other proposed changes include a second seat on SFPmg's seven-seat board, filled by the school superintendent. The agreement allows SFPGM to proceed with its planned acquisition of a radio station in West Palm Beach, so long as the license is transferred to the district once finalized.
