Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews was injured during a game against the Anaheim Ducks, leaving with a knee-on-knee collision with Radko Gudas. Despite the game's comeback, the loss of Matthews could be a significant blow for the team, which has been struggling throughout the season. GUDas received a major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct, and will face a hearing to determine supplemental discipline. Assistant captains John Tavares and Morgan Rielly described the hit as "dirty" and said the team should have done more to defend Matthews initially. Despite a more physical response in the third period, Toronto coach Craig Berube admitted the other four players on the ice should have taken action.
