The new musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic American novel, The Great Gatsby, is currently playing at the Hobby Center in Houston. The show features lavish costumes, lavish rooms, lavish lighting, and a swimming pool off Long Island Sound. The book by Kait Kerrigan, music by Jason Howland, and lyrics by Bathan Nysen have transposed Fitzgerald's ideas about class, race, power, and noblesse oblige into romantic comedy fare without exploring the deeper themes that make the book universal. The production by Paul Tate dePoo III has been praised for its grandeur and seamless integration of dialogue and music within a scene. However, the soundtrack by Grammy and Tony nominee Howland has been criticized for being lacking in originality.
